Influenza in Ireland Week 9

March 12, 2012

Update by Dr J Gallagher, Employment Health Advisors:
Influenza activity in Ireland remained at low levels during week 9 2012. Several indicators are showing that influenza activity may have reached its peak for the 2011/2012 season. The sentinel GP influenza-like illness (ILI) consultation rate was slightly decreased compared to the rate of week 8 2011. ILI rates remain above the Irish baseline threshold (25.9 per 100,000 population). The highest age specific ILI rates were in the 0-4 year age group during week 9 2012. Three influenza-associated deaths have been reported to HPSC to date this season. Two influenza A outbreaks were reported to HPSC during week 9 2012. In Europe, the 2011/2012 influenza season started later than in recent seasons and has been without any clear geographic progression. The national influenza season epidemics have peaked in the first affected countries and remain dominated by influenza A (H3) viruses.
