The June bank holiday weekend is traditionally the busiest time for road users and this year was no exception spurred on by a significant improvement in the weather conditions across the country. A drive of some 200 Km by the writer over the 4 days of the bank holiday and which included one of the highest risk periods in the day (5 to 7 pm), I saw no evidence of Garda traffic speed checks or checkpoints! This was on a weekend where the Gardaí were operating a national speed enforcement campaign called ‘Operation Slow Down which was targeted at reducing the number of fatalities and injuries over the bank holiday weekend.

The release today of road traffic fatality numbers for the five months to end of May 2013 show a worrying upward trend of 75 people killed on the roads in the republic of Ireland in 2013 compared to 64 in…
